The successful applicant will join the Venue Technical team of the Academy and will work in all aspects of technical theatre presentations including stage, lighting and sound.

The duties of the post include providing technical support for the Academy's productions and events as well as local and international hirers' performances.

Appointee is expected to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends and public holidays.

Applicants should have:
(a) at least 5 subjects passed in the HKCEE; and
(b) either (i) a relevant technical certificate/diploma; or
(ii) a minimum of 4 years of technical experience in theatre, film/TV or entertainment business.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT
Appointment will be made on a two-year contract, with possibility of renewal, subject to mutual agreement. A gratuity payment equal up to 10% of basic salary earned during the contract period will be payable upon satisfactory completion of contract. Fringe benefits include leave and medical benefits. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Dancers perform in Hong Kong Disneyland's stage shows, special events, conventions and parades. They may appear both as part of a dance chorus, or as featured soloists. They must be trained dancers with a well-rounded background in jazz and ballet. Tumbling and gymnastic ability is a plus, but is not required.

Applicants must provide a current, non-returnable photo and resume. Qualified applicants will be invited to an audition. Auditions begin promptly at the times listed. Please arrive early to register. New Childrens Dance Studio opens - Red Shoe Dance

Ms Red Shoe - Or Jacqui as we know here, founded Red Shoe in 2005. Back then the classes moved from school to school; her mission was to make dance more accessible to young children and teenagers by introducing popular modern dance classes to the activity programs within various ESF and International Schools throughout Hong Kong. Since then it has grown and with the opening of it's very own Red Shoe Dance Studios in August 2011, Red Shoe Dance has become one of the most popular kids dance schools in Hong Kong for dance tuition.

Students can choose from a variety of dance styles; from Ballet, Jazz, Street Dance and Hip-Hop to Contemporary, Lyrical, and Musical Theater. In addition, RAD Ballet and ADAPT Jazz Examination Syllabus classes are offered to students who wish to strengthen their technique and advance to a much higher level. No matter what style students choose, they will learn techniques that improve posture, flexibility, co-ordination, concentration, and build strength and confidence.

Students are given many opportunities to perform at regular events throughout the year and are encouraged to participate in many of the community arts projects which take place in Hong Kong.

First up - Blush - the first pan asian girl band, are gonna be supporting the Bieber monster in HK soon. Working with them is Rock Fang, on of our favourite HK Hip Hop choreographers. Go team Blush!

Next we hear that the Twins are shooting their next vid in Australia right now, allegedly with some of the same team behind Lady GaGa and Beyonce's iconic Telephone video. On set with them is Jen Chiang from HK...

All we know so far is that Rochelle Flaherty, ex Macau dancer and now production manager at this new club has been auditioning dancers for what we HOPE will be a great new performance venue in town. So far Hong Kong's been a bit lacking in venues that can showcase our local dance talent and entertainment. Whether Bisous will deliver on its promise and give us a show to remember, or whether it will become another 'nearly' club (LaKage, we are talking to you...) only time will tell. Apparently easy to enter, not so easy to get a table (buy a bottle or reservations only) we're not sure who this club is catering for. If it's us dancers and entertainers then make the tables cheaper! If it's the bankers, movers and shakers, then make space for us on stage... see you all at Bisous b**ches...

Shimmies and hip drops; shoulder shakes and snake arms, bouncy footwork, isolations and a toss of the hair, belly dancing is a highly complex art form in which different parts of the body move with energy and grace, often to different rhythms.

World Belly Dance Day on 14th May is an initiative to unite dancers around the world to celebrate the wonderful art of belly dance! KlubRaqs and Oasis Dance Centre are each holding parties and performances to mark the event and with a bevy of classes to be offered throughout the city each week, what better time to embrace your inner goddess?

Already well established in Hong Kong, belly dancing has been here over 20 years with classes taught by specialist teachers in dance studios and in gyms across the region. The 1996 Hong Kong movie "My Mother was a Belly Dancer" is proof positive that the style has taken root and is here to stay!

Roots of the dance

Arguably the most ancient form of dance still practiced today, belly dancing has long been a way to celebrate femininity and womanhood and a way for dancers to get in touch with the natural rhythms of their bodies. Belly dancing traces its history across the Middle East and North Africa where in the 19^th Century writers such as Gustav Flaubert where enchanted, enticed and held aghast by the dance. It then made its way through much of Europe to the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893 where ‘Little Egypt’ took the stage by storm and belly dancing became a worldwide phenomenon.

A Rough Guide

Belly dancing can come in many names and guises - "Belly Dancing", "Oriental Dance" and "Raqs Sharqi." Today "Tribal Fusion," or "ATS" (American Tribal Style) takes a freer, more modern approach to choreography in which pretty much anything goes and it is often much funkier that typical "Belly Dancing" style.

There are also various styles of folk dancing, including most famously Baledi and Saidi which can be taught as part of “Belly dancing” or “Tribal Fusion”, or in separate folk dance classes. Finally there are props classes in which you can learn to use zills (finger cymbals), veils, canes and other adornments to enhance to dance and add new challenges.

Where and what can you learn in Hong Kong?

Oasis Dance Centre with Mei Jen- ‘Fun and flirty dancing’

The oldest and longest running studio in Hong Kong; classes at offer a very rounded approach to belly dancing. Warm ups are designed to get the heart going a little, reinforce technique and introduce elements of the choreography to be used later on. In a similarly rounded approach, the classes at Oasis can focus on a particular style, such as traditional Raqs Sharqi or Baledi, or use modern music and choreography drawing on a range of styles. Mei Jen's class structure is 50/50 technique and choreography, which means that by the end of class you've had a little exercise, improved some technique and practiced it within a dance. Her style reflects her personality- fun, cute and flirty!

What you notice about Oasis is that there is a real community atmosphere in the studio, something reflected in the loyalty of the students and the range of ages from teens to paw paws, all of which further adds to the all encompassing and eclectic feel of the class.

KlubRaqs with Jenna Janaki- ‘How to be think like a belly dancer’

Lessons at KlubRaqs are about going beyond technique and choreography and learning how to think like a belly dancer; how to be a belly dancer! Musical appreciation is key and we begin by listening to the drums and marking out the different rhythms, then applying different moves to the different layers of the music to see how the two are put together in a way that's all about developing the dancer's understanding. In addition, live drummers in some classes allow students to practice the art of working with musicians, adding an extra layer to the dance. What’s unique about this class is that you can really learn to understand your art and to make the dance your own!

Kitty prides herself on working her students hard and she's one tough coach! Kitty brings her passion to the studio in a way that in infectious. Learning to dance with Kitty is about discipline, "The way I was taught", and she places a great emphasis on technique. Her choreography is beautiful and challenging, incorporating a huge variety of layered moves. Kitty's training resume is impressive and reflects her dedication to her art and her frequent visits to Cairo and New York mean that her dance is highly authentic. Kitty's motto is "Hard work, discipline and an open heart" and this is what she and her students bring to the class.

Pasha at Amico Studio- ‘High energy and fun!’

Star of the movie "My Mother was a Belly Dancer" Pasha is prominent in the Hong Kong belly dancing scene. She begins her classes with a warm up and some sequences that both develop technique and will feature in her choreography later on. Pasha blends moves from her native Uygur style of dance with other traditional and modern styles, depending upon the music, and her routines are always fun, energetic and enjoyable. Pasha also teaches a 'Workshop' which focuses on a different prop- zills, veil, cane, etc. for 10 weeks, developing understanding as well as technique relevant to each. Throughout the class Pasha can often be heard saying “Smile for the camera”- a constant reminder that we are here to dance, have fun, and share that joy with others!

Asian Grand Prix Ballet Competition held in Hong Kong

Asian Grand Prix (AGP) is the first ever international ballet competition to be held in Hong Kong in August 2011. Entries are now open until July (see the flyer below) and there's $50,000HKD up for grabs for the winner, plus scholarships, coverage and other prizes.

The event is organized by the prestigious Hong Kong Arts Development and Production Company and co- produced with the talented Youth Ballet of Asia.

AGP mission is to promote excellence in Ballet. The AGP is a grand 4 day event where students and dancers, aged 8- 26, from across the globe compete for medals, cash prizes and scholarships.

Catch ballet stars from all over the world at Galaxy: International Ballet Gala 2011 which will be held from 27-29 May 2011 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre’s Grand Theatre. Following the success of The Hong Kong Ballet’s gala in 2009, eight international stars have been invited to join The Hong Kong Ballet dancers in a celebration of dance.

Performing contemporary works will be The Hong Kong Ballet’s guest principal dancer, Tan Yuan Yuan and her partner Damian Smith. These stars of San Francisco Ballet who have been dancing together for many years, will bring beautiful pas de deux by two of the most sought-after contemporary choreographers, Yuri Possokhov and Edwaard Liang. The pieces, Diving into the Lilacs, Magrittomania and Somewhere in Time are superbly animated by Tan and Smith’s dancing, which has a graceful elegance, born of controlled energy, technical precision and emotional depth. Drew Jacoby and Rubinald Pronk are a contemporary dance pairing who have performed at galas across the world, presenting a bold, modern approach to ballet. Their pieces are striking for their seamless combination of traditional ballet techniques with a modern, exploratory aesthetic.

The gala will also feature a number of classical pieces, danced by guest stars from Europe. From English National Ballet come Senior Principal dancer Daria Klimentová and her partner, the rising star, First soloist Vadim Muntagirov who was nominated for English National Ballet’s Emerging Dancer Award 2011;they will be joined by the Dutch National Ballet’s Principal dancer Jurgita Dronina, and Dinu Tamazlacaru, a soloist at Berlin State Ballet (Staatsballett Berlin). Jurgita and Dinu will perform perhaps the best-known pas de deux in the classical repertoire, the pas de deux from Don Quixote. They will both bring solos; Jurgita’s solo, choreographed by Juanjo Arques, will have its world première at Galaxy.

Dancers from The Hong Kong Ballet including Jin Yao, Huang Zhen, Zhang Yao, Zhang Si Yuan, Liu Yu-yao and Wu Yan, will delight with a selection of both classical pieces and modern ballets, a comical satire of a pas de deux, and a world première of the pas de trois taken from Fei Bo’s short ballet which is currently in development, due to première in November 2011.

Each performance will showcase an array of pieces, with the programme varying slightly for each show. This is a fantastic opportunity for Hong Kong audiences to see a wide range of dance from The Hong Kong Ballet as well as international guests. The breadth of styles and talent promises to make this a Gala to remember.

Reggaeton's roots started off as Spanish reggae in Puerto Rico and consists predominantly of latin urban music. Reggaeton blends West-Indian music influences of reggae and dancehall with those of Latin America such as bomba, plena, salsa, latin pop and bachata as well as those of hip hop, contemporary R&B and electronica.

It has its own specific beat and rhythm commonly referred to as "Dem Bow" - a drum and percussion pattern created through a drum machine. Reggaeton's origins represents a fusion of many different musical genres and influences from various countries in the Caribbean, Latin America and the United States.

Reggaeton started as a genre composed of mostly male artists, with a slowly increasing number of female artists debuting over the years.

In this workshop you get the best of both with Cristo and Lucia. It’s a workshop with real native underground roots from the Reggaeton culture. Cristo & Lucia will teach you the authetic ‘riddims’ of Reggae – the Bam Bam riddim, the Poco riddim, the Fever Pitch riddim, and the Big-Up riddim.

DanceAsia sometimes reaches out beyond our sheltered shores, and let's face it, if you want to dance for a living in Asia, you need to travel. Whether that means heading to the States or Europe, most of the commercial work that dancers can pick up is outside of our continent.

We talk to one of Europe's leading commercial dancers in the Waacking and Vogue world, Milton Lopes and find out how he got to the top of his game.

DA: So Milton, you travel all over Europe. Tell us why you do that?

M: Being a dancer in Europe is great. All our countries are so close together and we can travel easily for each job. If I just danced in Portugal, or I just danced in 1 place, then the opportunities are less. I am lucky. I have travelled to Germany to perform at events like the Hamburg International Dance Festival, then I can go back to Lisbon to dance with Madonna.

DA: Do you think that dancers have a better opportunities to work if they are willing to travel?

M: Yes, for sure, you must! Some dancers will take work on cruise ships, some dancers will travel with companies like Cirque Du Soleil or Disney and some dancers will work freelance where they can, but all great dancers have at some point worked abroad. It also gives you experience in another style and culture, and improves your dancing. The dancers in Asia dance a very different style to Europe, and the dancers in USA are different again. I love to train in all disciplines and learn from international dancers.

DA: Tell us about your career highlights in Europe.

M: I'm lucky because I've been booked for some of the top shows in the region. For any commercial dancer, the highlight of their career is to perform with top music artists, either on tour or on stage and when I performed with Madonna at the 2005 MTV Music Awards, that was a highlight for me. I'm also really pleased to have been able to represent the best singing talent on our national TV Keli Hilson (in the German equivalent of American Idol) and to dance in Europe's top competitions.

DA: We know you best for your love of all things Vogue, but you are a versatile dancer. What advice can you give to young dancers looking to work in Europe coming from Asia?

M: Take class in all different styles, learn as much as you can, and in Europe you will need to know Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary and Hip Hop just to get a commercial job. Many dancers in Asia only train in Hip Hop, you need to know it all, so train and then go and be free! Try it and love it! Europe is a great place to get experience.

The "RED HOT" competition takes place only once a year in Hong Kong. Performing in front of a public audience, dancers battle it out in hip hop, breaking, and more to be crowned the RED HOT QUEENS and RED HOT KINGS. This past fall, 2 breakout stars were crowned the RED HOT QUEENS after winning with their original hip hop number.

Dancing together now for 3 years, Ka Yan Ho (left) and Alison Wong (right) are graduates of Studiodanz's 1st ever Showbiz Project, the studio's intensive program that trains dancers to go pro. Their biggest influences along the way have been Angela Hang, Sunny Wong, and Chris Choi. Along with being crowned the QUEENS, their crew, G-Next, won 2nd place at HK's Best Dance Crew Competition 2010. Today, along with hip hop, the duo's dancing is evolving, "We love electronic music these days and just enjoy being creative in the studio."

Keep an eye out for these two. After visiting Edge and Millenium studios in LA, where they said that the dancers were "so passionate and have great style," the dream is big, "We would love to dance for Usher, Beyonce, or Ciara and travel the world to perform and teach."

“Echale salsita!” sang 1930’s Cuban artists Sexteto Habanero, “Put some sauce on it!” Saucy, sexy, fun and set to explode in Hong Kong by way of the Hong Kong Salsa Festival, salsa is an already well established dance craze that is just getting bigger and bigger.

The popular misconception is that salsa is from Cuba. In fact, salsa is a musical form that emerged in New York among Cuban, Puerto Rican and African American musicians with roots in Cuban popular and folk music such as son, rhumba and mambo, enhanced with African American jazz.

There are as many different ways of dancing salsa as there are styles of salsa music and how you dance will usually depend on either where you come from, or where your teacher came from.

On a technical level the most common division is between “salsa on one” and “salsa on two”, the difference being on which beat you take that all important “break” (forwards, backwards, or sideways step). In New York, arguably the first home of salsa, the break on two is most popular and the style is all about balance and timing. There’s also L.A. style, which tends to be more flashy and showy; Cuban style, involving lots of body movement and interpretation; while the Colombians like their salsa fast and furious!

In addition, club style is naturally more relaxed, dancers share a small space and are therefore closer and the movements are tighter, whereas competition and stage salsa are bigger and showier and geared towards performance, which allows for a larger range of movement in order to be seen and appreciated.

If that weren’t enough variety, salsa can even be performed solo, by troupes, or by couples in a “rueda” or circle.

The Hong Kong Salsa Festival 2011

The 10th Hong Kong Salsa Festival is set to explode in the city in February and the line up is more exciting and bigger than ever before. With artists from all over the world and workshops from beginner to advanced, whatever your salsa background, there’s something to get your feet moving and put a smile on your face.

Taking place over 7 days, with parties every night and workshops and performances over 4 days, the festival offers a varied and exciting program. To gain an insight into salsa in Hong Kong I spent an evening with organizer, Joseph Ennin of Quick Step Productions taking one of his classes then heading off to a club night. He tells DanceAsia what it’s all about…

DA: What are the highlights of the festival this year?

JE: The competition is set to be spectacular. Artists from Australia, the U.K., Nepal, Indonesia, France, Italy, Korea and Hong Kong will be competing in three categories: team, amateur and professional, so like much of the festival, the event will encompass a myriad of dance.

Another great event will be the street party on the Avenue of Stars. This is a personal favorite of mine as it involves performances by the best dancers, and then gets back to basics and everyone can have a go, from children to grandmothers and beginners to seasoned dancers. Everyone joins the party and it makes Hong Kong’s salsa festival truly unique!

Finally, there’s the Night of the Superstars, in which top performers from around the world, as well as some of my students, showcase their talents in an amazing display of salsa.

So why do people love salsa?

Because everyone can do it! You don’t need any special equipment or shoes and you can start straight away. As soon as you’ve learned a few basic steps you can begin dancing. Here’s the catch: salsa is easy to pick up, although it’s hard to master.

So what makes a stylish salsa dancer?

Inventiveness and creativity on the dance floor. You have to be able to work with different dancers and make whatever you both can do look great. You have to be smooth and, most importantly, you have to make it fun! The key to stylish salsa is musicality. You can be technically perfect, but if you’re not into the music you’re not really in the groove. “Use your body like another instrument,” a musician once told me, “play” with the band, try and dance with the music, not just to it.

The recurring theme is the importance of “having a good dance.” Tell me about that.

You can come from different salsa backgrounds and have varying skill levels, but when you come together to dance, it’s about having a good time. In other words, dance not only with the music, but also with your partner. You might be able to execute highly complex steps on two, but if your partner is a beginner who has learned to dance on one, neither of you are going to enjoy it if you insist upon doing so, nor are you going to look good trying!

With so many dancers and teachers approaching you and sending in videos how do you pick workshop leaders and performers?

I try to look for something different or unusual. I also try to vary the program; if someone is good at aerial, I try to find someone who’s good at something else. I try not to have more than two of anything.

So how did YOU get started?

I was first introduced to salsa in 1995 when a friend dragged me along to a club in London. I was reluctant and sat out most of the night, but the seeds were planted and I went back and started learning. On a trip to Oxford, my partner and I entered a competition, thinking that away from home we could enjoy anonymity. Unbeknownst to us, we entered and went on to win the European Salsa Championships! In 1999, I moved to Hong Kong and have been building the scene here ever since.

So Joseph, what is salsa style?

I prefer not to stick to one style, but fuse elements of all to create surprising and exciting dancing. Salsa style has no set look; the look is you. I personally love white or black and white shoes. They’re a little flashy, but fun. They really draw the eye to the footwork and they also remind me of the old days when people first started salsa in New York. It’s what they used to wear and I like that it reminds me of that.”

Joseph’s teaching style is fun, fun, fun! He injects plenty of humor into his teaching, giving some of the steps nicknames. He taught us a few different styles of Suzie Q, which he dubbed “get down Suzie” and “Princess Suzie” helping to create the feeling he was trying to convey. He taught some fun and funky footwork. It looked tough and highly impressive, but Joseph broke it down and by the end of the class we were all able to execute the moves at speed.

Club 97 on a Wednesday is the longest running salsa night in Hong Kong. With Joseph on the decks and live drummers Aldo Privilege, Jordie Guzma and Chris Polanco of “Azucar Latino,” the atmosphere is hot and people were up and dancing straight away until the wee hours of the night! Everyone is welcome: girls danced with girls, an old Chinese lady danced with a young Westerner, some people just enjoyed moving to the music and aficionados cut a rug on the dance floor. The HK scene is very social and you do NOT need to be an expert. Unlike other places where a great deal of emphasis is placed on technical skills, in HK, and in true Latino style, it’s all about enjoying dancing and having fun.)

1. Eddis Tang of “Pure Salsa” - Friday nights at ‘Dancing Jupiter’ in Quarry Bay He runs consecutive bachata and salsa-on-1 classes, followed by a social dance. Eddis’ is a multi-level class, and he adapts to whoever’s in the room, providing choreography that’s challenging to everyone but manageable by all. He and his partner Angie begin the evening with a dance, nicely setting the style. The choreography begins with some basic steps, but within the hour he’s broken down some complex steps and we’re pulling off some pretty hot looking moves. There’s a laid back and loose feel to Eddis’ style of salsa that’s a little like swing and contrasts with and compliments the ballroom style of the earlier bachata style of dancing.

2. Franky “Salsaman” Wong, Hong Kong’s longest running salsa teacher, has dancing all over the world and also has been teaching the city how to dance since 1997. After a quick warm-up, it’s partner up and start dancing! The class progresses very quickly and Franky is an excellent teacher, his instructions clear and precise. After teaching a move, he’ll offer a variation for the more proficient, which is great to watch even if you’re not quite there yet! There are enough partners to go around, thanks to his team of dancers, so you’re always dancing in a real situation. We got the chance last minute to briefly interview LIZ LIRA, 9 time World Ultimate Salsa & Latin Dance Champion who is performing at this year's HK Salsa Festival. Liz grew up in La Paz, Bolivia, immigrated to the states when she was eight and soon fell in love with dance. Pursuing dance in her new home of Southern California, she trained professionally namely in ballet, but in all other forms as well including jazz, modern, lyrical, and hip hop. It was not until 2001, when she was 21 years old, that she appeared on the LA salsa scene. Liz has gone on to win numerous awards in dance and choreography and has since made her way into TV/film as well.

1. How did you get your start in salsa? Was there a specific moment where you knew you wanted to be a dancer?

Salsa - Tropical music has always been in my life since I grew up in La Paz, Bolivia. I started salsa dancing by a young man asking to be his practice partner. At this time, I had no idea of salsa: the social salsa and competitive scene. I knew I wanted to be a dancer since I was born because I loved to move, jump around, danced to everything and loved music.

2. You are highly successfully and heavily awarded salsera. How much work does it take?

Correction, I am successful and heavily awarded choreographer, Latin, Salsera and Argentine Tango Principal. It takes passion and dedication! Just to give you an idea, I work seven days a week, 10-12+ hours a day and keep up my cross training and education in all genres/styles of dance!

3. What has been one of the best moments of your career?

The best moments of my career are waking up everyday and knowing I am living my dream and sharing my art with my students, fans and Liz Lira Dance Academy.

4. You have choreographed for TV shows like "Dancing with the Stars," "So You Think You Can Dance" and films as well. What's that like?!

This work is a bonus for me, for I am a private artist. But, for a brief moment I can give TV shows/films the Liz Lira touch :). As of this year 2011, I am open to to working in TV & Film! So, I am currently working with a leading actress and preparing her for a big motion picture coming out soon!!!!!! She will do amazing...I am ecstatic!

5. How is it different dancing in Hong Kong? Compared to other countries?

I have yet to find since I get in Friday! Looking forward to a wonderful time!

6. Do you have any advice for young dancers aspiring to win awards and have big careers in competition and in film/TV?

Respect yourself and others (including your competition). Be your own person and artist period.

Hong Kong Arts Festival kicks off this week and there are a host of traditional dance acts coming to town. If you like to keep things classic, then check out NEW YORK CITY BALLET who are performing their highly praised interpretations of classic choreography by Balanchine and Robbins:

A bit of history for you: The company was founded by Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein in 1948, and helped to establish the traditions of ballet in America.
